Stockings
The tradition of Christmas Stockings is believed to originate in a folk tale about St Nicholas, which tells of a poor man who lived long ago with his three beautiful daughters. He worried day and night about what would happen to them when he died and St Nicholas, hearing of his plight and knowing the old man would not accept charity, decided to help in secret, throwing three bags of gold through an open window in the dead of night. One landed in a stocking that had been left to dry by the fire, and they all lived happily ever after! The oranges we now put in stockings are said to represent the golden gift of St Nicholas.
