Inspiration this year comes from the Pagan tradition of Yule, a fascinating precursor of modern celebrations.
Falling on the Winter Solstice (21 or 22 December) Yule marks a turning point in the year as the days begin to lengthen, heralding the return of warmth and light.
Yule festivities lasted 12 days (now recognisable in the Twelve Days of Christmas) and involved the lighting of fires and candles, bringing berries and evergreens into the home - symbols of nature's enduring spirit - and making small offerings of food and gifts to honour ancestral spirits.
